Email Design - The Basics

When I say efficient design, I mean that the newsletter should inspire confidence, construct a connection of trust and devotion between your business and costumers and in no circumstance it should annoy or create negative relationships. The most important things for a fantastic email layout are: it should to be readily recognized, have an internet based version, easy unsubscribe option; integration using social media, which will be a must today and a mobile edition. The content will be ordered and display all the images properly.

Design continuity. Whenever someone receives your newsletter, particularly if it's the first time, he should understand instantly who the sender is. This will produce the first impression which will result in one of the next: that he will read or instead ignore your email, or worse, will mark it as spam. You should be consistent and design your newsletter in the exact same style. It should be image and brand continuity of your website. Include your logo in the header of the newsletter with your slogan or other symbols of your manufacturer. Use the same colors, fonts and graphics as on your site as far as possible. At the footer of this newsletter, include your contact information. At the same place you're able to give a little explanation why the reader received this email from you. It might sound something like: "You're receiving this newsletter because you signed up to receive Your CompanyName newsletter. To ensure our newsletter always reaches your inbox, please add infoatyoucompanyname.com to your address book."

The web based version. Some of your readers can't or don't need to look at html emails in their email clients. This is why you need to include a "View the online version" link at the header of your newsletter. This link will open the newsletter from the default browser.

Integration with social websites. Your newsletter is a great method to collect more fans on your Facebook page, more followers on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube etc and more subscribers to a RSS feed. To link your viewers with your accounts on your treasured social websites, just don't forget to include at a visible place of your newsletter the various call to action links. Additionally, you may include Facebook "Like" and Twitter "Twitt" buttons for each guide, product or whole newsletter. Or a much simpler way to market your newsletter is to add a "Forward to a friend" link.

Good content construction. Do not just duplicate in your newsletter all the articles from your site. If you've got a promotion, a special offer or a significant statement be sure to place it at the very visible place, above the rest of the content. Decide which content is the most important and place it on the top. Grab attention with big titles and colored call to action buttons, but be careful not to overdo it. Do not place full articles. A couple of paragraphs using a "read more" link to your site are sufficient.
Using images, flash, interactive forms. The majority of the email clients have the pictures turned off by default. That is why it is not recommended to include significant content within images. You have to ensure that your readers are going to be able to receive your message even when they had the images turned off. The graphics you use shouldn't be overly large. Remember that some email clients (like Outlook 2007) don't support background images. Don't embed flash and do not use interactive types.

Designing for cellular. Optimize your newsletter for mobile devices or create a mobile-friendly version of your newsletter and provide a link to it.

Simple unsubscribe chance. Don't neglect to include an unsubscribe link. Do not even attempt to hide it from the reader. If someone made a decision to unsubscribe, it's far better to let him go than to find a annoyed contributor, or even worse, a spam complaint.
